Give some meaning, some direction, somewhere to put your energy into
outside all the questions you’d been having about your life and the choices you had made, someone to lift the blue.
For my part, I liked the circles that you ran in.
Thought I could meet some new people
and make some good connections.
And I liked the way it felt to be out and have people see
that I was the one who was with you.
Back when we first met and I was hesitant,
but at night I’d fantasize about you.
I wasn’t stringing you along, I just wasn’t sure of what you wanted
or if I wanted to be that for you.
But then that afternoon at your house, I had you take off all your clothes and you came while I watched, well that really turned me on.
The way you liked to be used, even though it was dirty,

it was good to know that we could claim them.
I always knew that in the back of your mind you were comparing me to some ex lover, and even though I wasn’t the same man

Now I see you in a different light, with members of your extended family calling every other month looking for handouts.
Everyone keeps looking for this thing that they can’t name, some answer, and that’s probably why it won’t find them,
cause they can’t see their problems.
And I’m not ashamed about anything I’ve done,
to me it’s just another story.
Feel the same way about my accomplishments,
they’re just an easier refrain in certain company.
And I’m glad for a time where we could both fill a need we thought was real, and that after the spell broke it turned into compassion and love and reverence.
